MEN’S 2020 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Winnetka Men’s Club  -  August 29th and 30th

ELIGIBILITY:

Open to Winnetka Men's Club members and members from prior year.

ENTRY FEE:

For this year's members - $0.00.  For last year's members - $40.00 via website

Optional $30 cash for the two day skins game.  

TEE TIMES:
On Saturday, times begin at 9:20 and on Sunday they begin at 8:40, although we will be carving out times amongst the member's permanent tee times that may be earlier than these times.   With permission two or more participants can play in the afternoon Saturday to accommodate schedules, but all play on Sunday must be from the scheduled times.

HANDICAPS:

All play will use your index from Friday, Aug 28th (ignorning any update on the 29th or 30th).

RULES:

USGA Rules of Golf will apply. Rangefinders are acceptable for measuring distances provided slope is not used (subject to disqualification).  All putts must be holed by the player (no “gimmies”).

Unusual Conditions:  Two conditions for 2020:

1. Due to the fall drought there are many areas that are unplayable.  As a result we will be playing preferred lies in closely mown areas.  Your relief is the lesser of 6 inches or full relief for the lie from the unusual condition.   Be sure to mark your ball with a tee or coin before picking it up (just like on the green).  Place your ball where you are taking relief.    There is no relief in the rough.
2. Due to COVID-19, there are no rakes available to smooth the bunkers.  Players are granted free relief from footprints and disturbances from prior play.  Players are not granted free relief from simply having a poor lie in the bunker.  Relief will be the same as preferred lies, although the ball must remain in the bunker.  Mark the ball, take the 6" or full relief from the footprint, and place the ball.

In all cases, if you have a question about a lie, ask your playing partners BEFORE taking relief.

Local Rules:   For this competition, we have adopted the local rule that permits you to take relief from a lost ball or out of bounds from the spot the area the ball is presumed lost or went out of bounds.   You can still play a provisional, but that may not always be your best option.  Brush up on this rule here:  https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/rules-modernization/major-changes/golfs-new-rules-stroke-and-distance.html

Speed of Play (aka "No Grinding")

You are also obligated to keep pace with the group in front of you.  It is each player’s responsibility to ensure the entire group remains on pace.  We will follow the USGA’s guidance on slow play by placing golfers “on the clock” if they are out of position.  Players who are on the clock and do not speed up their pace will be assessed a two stroke penalty.

If you cannot find a ball please ask your playing partners to assist.

OTHER LOCAL RULES:

Wet grounds:  Players have the option to invoke the embedded ball Local Rule b) described below if applicable, or USGA Rule 25-1 for abnormal ground conditions (including casual water).  25-1 provides the player may lift the ball and drop it from casual water without penalty within one club-length from the nearest point of relief, but not nearer the hole.

Embedded Ball Rule:  USGA Rule 25-2 is in effect “through the green” at all times; i.e. everywhere except hazards, the putting green and teeing ground of the hole being played.  The ball may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole.

Out of Bounds:  Out of bounds is defined by the inside edge at ground level of white stakes, white lines and/or perimeter fence posts (Hole #1,2, 3, and 13) and paved roads (Hole #1).

Water Hazards and Lateral Water Hazards:  Stakes identify the type of hazard.  Painted lines define the margin of the hazard.  In the absence of painted lines, the imaginary line between two adjacent stakes shall define the margin.   PLEASE BE COGNIZANT THAT ONLY A PORTION OF THE LAKE ON HOLE #9 IS MARKED AS A LATERAL HAZARD (i.e. yellow stakes do not allow you to take line of sight relief).

Obstructions:   An “obstruction” is anything artificial, including the artificial surfaces and sides of roads and paths and manufactured ice, except:  i) Objects defining out of bounds, such as walls, fences, stakes and railings.  ii) Any part of an immovable artificial object which is out of bounds; and  iii) Any construction declared by the Committee to be an integral part of the course.   An obstruction is a movable obstruction if it may be moved without unreasonable effort, without unduly delaying play and without causing damage.  Otherwise it is an immovable obstruction.

Paved Cart Paths:  Relief is granted for concrete, asphalt, gravel & crushed stone paths only.  Curbs bordering the cart paths are considered part of the path.  The nearest point of relief is used and relief is of one club length no nearer the hole. Curbs bordering dirt paths are immovable obstructions – relief of one club length no nearer to the hole is granted.

Environmentally Sensitive Areas:  Free relief at nearest point, no nearer the hole from all flower beds, staked trees, or trees with tubing around the trunk.   Trees with mulch around them are not considered environmentally sensitive areas.  Free relief to the nearest point not nearer the hole also applies for balls coming to rest on the wrong putting green.

Any additional local rules will be posted before each round.

FORMAT:

36 Hole Individual Stroke Play Event with 1st, 2nd and 3rd places paid for both net and gross score.  You will win the highest prize you are eligible to receive.

FLIGHTS:

The Championship Class plays from the black tees; A, B, and C play from the blue tees, and Class D plays from the white tees.  In all cases, if the sum of a member's handicap index plus their age equals or exceed 80 they may play from the White tees.

SKINS:

There will be an optional net skins game - $30 cash for both rounds.  1/2 strokes will be applied where each shot would fall.

GROSS AND NET WINNERS:

The player returning the lowest 36 hole score winner of the gross flight.  For the net flight, 100% of the handicap will be used, with a maximum of 36 strokes.  If there is a tie for 1st place in the gross event, there will be a sudden-death playoff to determine the winner. Resolution of ties for other positions will be determined by the USGA recommended method.

SCORING:

One scorecard per player shall be returned to the Tournament Committee with two signatures. A scorecard is deemed returned when the score is posted on the scoreboard.   

PACE OF PLAY:

Each group shall keep pace with the group ahead. If a team fails to keep pace, the group or individual player may be subject to a warning and penalty.

POSTING YOUR SCORE:

Make sure you post your scores and use the tournament indicator.

DOUBT AS TO PROCEDURE:

RULE 3-3: If a competitor is doubtful of his rights or procedure, he may, without penalty, complete the hole with two balls. After the doubtful situation has arisen and before taking further action, the competitor must announce to his fellow-competitor that he intends to play two balls and which ball he wishes to count if the Rules permit. The competitor must report the facts of the situation to the Tournament Committee before returning his scorecard. If he fails to do so, he is disqualified.

TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE:

The Men’s Club Tournament Committee shall resolve any disputes or doubtful points and its decision shall be final.
